Keep the skills. Build the habits.Pre-K through 6th grade, and grades 7 to 9

Certified classroom teachers work one-on-one or in a small group on reading, writing, and math. For grades 7 to 9, the session is the assignment itself: plan it, start it, and finish it. In home or on Zoom.

What a session actually teaches

Learning skills, matched to the grade

Summer slide is lost practice. The fix is the skill itself, taught by a teacher, a few times a week, at the level the child is entering.

About ages 4 to 6

Pre-K and kindergarten

The building blocks, practiced out loud with a teacher.

  • Letter sounds, first words, and listening to a short story
  • Counting, comparing, and seeing quantities
  • Waiting a turn, following two steps, and staying with one activity

Elementary

Grades 1 to 4

Keep the year, and close the gap that showed up in class.

  • Reading fluency and answering a question from the text
  • Number sense, operations, and explaining the steps
  • Sentences that say one clear thing, then a short paragraph
  • A checklist: get the materials, do the first step, check the work

The step before middle school

Incoming 5th and 6th grade

Hold the math and writing the next grade assumes, before the slide.

  • Fractions, ratios, and the math ideas 6th grade expects
  • A paragraph with a claim, evidence, and a revision
  • Breaking an assignment into steps and estimating time
  • Noticing when attention slipped, and restarting without a prompt

Middle school, where the assignment gets longer

Grades 7 to 9

The subject is often known. The grade drops because the work is not planned, started, or finished.

  • Read the directions and say what the assignment is asking
  • Break a multi-day assignment into steps and estimate the time
  • Start the first step without being walked to the desk
  • Notice when attention slipped, and restart
  • Check the finished work against the directions before turning it in

One-on-one with a certified classroom teacher. The work is an assignment the student already has.

In home

A local certified teacher comes to the family, on a morning or afternoon the household already keeps.

Online

The same teacher-led lesson on Zoom, with the materials on the table in front of the child.

One-on-one

The default. One teacher, one child, one skill until it holds.

Small group

A few children on the same skill, still planned child by child. Useful for discussion, reading aloud, and math talk.

Why Choose Kids on the Yard

Why Families Choose Summer Tutoring with UsReal Teachers, Real Results

A teacher plans the lesson from what the child can already do. The work is reading, writing, math, and the habits that make those skills usable in class.

Certified classroom teachers

State-certified teachers who already know the grade-level curriculum. Lessons are written for this child, not pulled from a generic packet.

One-on-one or a small group

Most families choose a private session. A small group works when children need the same skill and learn well beside a peer. The teacher still plans each child's work.

30-minute sessions

Each session is 30 minutes, so a child can stay with one skill. Morning or afternoon, in home or online, around camps and family plans.

You hear what changed

The teacher tells you which skill was practiced, what the child could do, and what comes next. No score dashboards standing in for a conversation.

Executive function, practiced

Starting work, holding a plan, checking it, and moving on. These are taught inside the reading or math task, at the level the grade can use.

Plans and learning differences

Teachers can follow an IEP or 504 when a family shares it. The session stays a tutoring session: skill practice with a certified teacher, in a calm, predictable routine.

Who can join

Pre-K through 6th grade

Grades 7 to 9

Pre-K through 6th grade is reading, writing, and math in 30-minute sessions. Grades 7 to 9 are a separate track: 60 minutes on the student's own assignments, focused on planning, starting, and finishing.

Eligible Students

  • Pre-K and kindergarten students building early literacy, number sense, and the habit of staying with one activity
  • Elementary students (grades 1-4) keeping a skill that slipped, or going deeper in one subject
  • Incoming 5th and 6th graders holding the math and writing the next grade assumes
  • Grades 7 to 9 who know the subject and still miss work because it was never planned or finished
  • Children who learn better one-on-one, and children who learn well in a small group on the same skill
  • Students with an IEP or 504 whose family wants the plan followed in a tutoring session
  • Children who are solid in class and want a harder text or a harder problem, with a teacher beside them

What Parents Say

Success Stories from Our Families

We asked for reading, and we got reading. The teacher also taught her to stop, reread the question, and check her answer. That habit showed up in her other work.

A parent in Florida

Child entering 2nd grade

Math was the worry going into 4th grade. Sessions were short enough that he stayed with the problem, and the teacher sent home the one strategy they had just practiced.

A parent in California

Child entering 4th grade

Heading into 6th grade, the issue was starting a longer assignment. The teacher broke the writing into steps he could see, and he began the first step without being walked to the desk.
